Stefano Seletti runs, with his sister, the well known Italin brand Seletti, established in 1964 by Romano. The brand is a shining example of Italian innovation, the studio aims at a new poetry of production and daily life, an on-going journey within the idea of beauty.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING at MILAN DESIGN WEEK?
I expect to see a reaction to the difficult times we are living here in Europe. I not only expect new products but also new concepts, new styles, new materials. I believe less and less in perfection as far as “appearance” is concerned, and in combining soft colors, clean lines. I more and more love the contrasts instead, if they are made with skills, the products that have a soul even when they live alone and that are hard to match. I love what Sotsass did for the design world, with its debatable lines and his “wrong” colors, what Raf Simons does in fashion. So, in a few words: less design, more content!
WHERE WILL YOU DEFINITELY DINE WHILE IN MILAN?
I will dine in different places every day due to the multiple events and meetings of Salone. My home base will be Piazza degli Affari, the big stock exchange square open to the public that hosts the work of art of a great artist and friend, Maurizio Cattelan. We will set up a real Amusement Park in the square, where people will be able to taste the gourmet dishes cooked by my two amazing friends and chefs, the Passera sisters.
BEST PLACE FOR AN ESPRESSO / QUICK BITE?
The best place for an espresso will be any typical Milanese café, that you can find at every corner…but if it’s a beautiful, modern, curated, design spot, do not enter!!!
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF DESIGN WEEK IN YOUR OPINION?
I have been very focused on our events and I don’t know about others’ yet. I think this year the area of the “5vie”, the old roman Milan (oldest part of the city) will be the center of the “Fuori Salone”. We’ll try to show the best of our brand in this context too.
WHICH PARTICULAR EVENTS WILL YOU BE ATTENDING DURING DESIGN WEEK?
The main event that I will attend will be in the afternoon – evening of April 15th. From 6PM to 8PM we will present a very unusual collaboration with Studio Job. Together with them we have created a range of accessories for the outdoor: aluminum tables and chairs that will represent a real revolution in an area where neither ourselves nor Studio Job have ever worked. They are so used to working with limited editions and with very high price points, and for the first time they will partner with a “pop” brand like ours. What came out of this is amazing and I hope you will like it as much as I do.
WHERE WILL YOU BE STAYING? OR WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HOTEL IN MILAN?
I always stay at Ostellobello when in Milan, a very nicely curated and fun hostel in downtown Milan. The value for money is great, the staff is fun and friendly, the rooms are simple but clean and the people who stay there are mostly young travelers who come from all over the world. When you get there the staff offers you a glass of wine and you will always find someone to have a chat with. I feel at home there. I love Ostellobello!!!
CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOPS, PLACES TO SEE WHILE IN MILAN?
Rossana Orlandi, 10 corso como, la Rinascente (design supermarket). The Porta Nuova area is becoming more and more interesting too, and will be the center of the Expo in Milan this year.
